Week 12 – Teach One – Primary Colors

Primary-ColorsAs a kid, I was taught that red, yellow, and blue were primary colors. Only recently have I discovered that this is FALSE. In fact the primary colors are magenta, yellow, and cyan. In a post I saw on, please excuse my language, “I fucking love science!” the article was called “Five Science ‘Facts’ We Learnt At School That Are Plain Wrong.” The second wrong fact is that the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. They state that red and blue are NOT primary colors since primary colors are those that cannot be reproduced my mixing other colors. By mixing the correct colors of magenta and cyan we can get blue and by mixing magenta and yellow we can get red. We can see this in the picture below.

dw5hpvvm-1414408113Also stated on the website, it states that this is why when we see printer cartridges it has magenta, cyan, and yellow, NOT blue, yellow, and red. Color theorists have found this as well and the writer says they don’t know why when it should be. I found this completely fascinating and hopefully I’ve taught you something new. 🙂
