Week 10 – Artist Interview -Kadica Chhin

My beautiful box by Kadica Chhin was in the gallery. This piece was placed in the gallery “#sculptured”. I figured it would be sculptures like usual. What I got was nothing of the sort.

This piece is a black box with 4 holes containing body parts in which you reach into and attempt to guess what you were touching. When I realized what the piece was called it made me realized it was an inverse piece of the saying “beauty lies within.” people are so obsessed with what’s on the outside than what’s on the inside. On the outside of this box it was sticky and disgusting. Also, the box was black and looked very intimidating. On second thought, it could also be representative of death and how true beauty goes with you until you die. Of course it’s not representative of physical death, but rather things about your personality that a significant other would find attractive about you. Another interesting key piece of this piece was the two bottles of hand sanitizer on top of the box. I’m not sure if it was a part of the actual piece but I’m thankful it was there.
